A Rant About Recruiter Rumours

A Rant About Recruiter Rumours Agency recruiters are susceptible to pretty harsh reviews sometimes. This week I attended  a Q A session with social media expert and million-dollar business builder, Gary Vaynerchuk. He talked about success factors; work ethic, believing in yourself, persisting, having patience and well, you get the point. One thing that really stuck out to me was his take on misconceptions, and dealing with things that are out of your control. That includes dealing with falsities that he has little power  over. He talked about his competitors stealing his ideas and advice, repackaging it and selling it back to his fans, who buy it.  Frustrating stuff. Does he care? Not really; he seemed super confident that truths would come out eventually. It got me thinking about the bad reputation and rumours that hard-working, honest and passionate recruiters have to deal with.  I guess every industry has its generalisations and stereotypes. Real Estate Agents? Slimy. Journalists? Nosy. Actors? Self-obsessed. Teachers? Bossy. You get it. In all of these cases, its largely a matter of a some  bad eggs ruining the publics  perception of everybody else in their line of work.  Agency recruiters arent exempt from being generalised, and  tend to cop it pretty badly.  For a bunch of professionals who, at the end of the day are trying to help people realise their dreams and find work, some get a pretty bad reputation. I know there are  some absolute slime balls out there, but its just a fact of life that these types of people  will  pop up in every corner of the globe, irrespective of industry.    I believe there are several misconceptions about people working in agency recruitment. So, lets set a few things straight. Every Tom, Dick Harry could not  do the job Not just anyone can be a successful recruitment consultant on agency side. It is true that a lot of people do just fall into recruitment.  A lot of people come from completely contrasting  careers to give it a go. Sure, you can study HR or Business Management at university, but there isnt a Bachelors Degree in Recruitment on offer. Why? Because there is no rigid set of requirements to what it takes to be a great recruiter.  The recipe for success in recruitment is made up of a  mix of organisation, people skills and determination. Recruitment tends to operate on an open-door policy; if you want to give it a go, the option will be out there for you. But that doesnt mean youll stick at it and be great, theres a lot more to it than a lot of people think, and some people just arent cut out for the challenge. In regards to why there is an open door policy, its not just to let every man and his dog in for numbers sake.    More than 100,000 people work in the recruitment industry in the UK alone, but there is  still a genuine talent shortage in recruitment, and competitiveness among firms. One of the biggest struggles agencies face  is hiring and retaining top talent. Considering the variety of backgrounds great recruiters could come from, it makes sense for managers to give eager people a go, and a chance to succeed. Whether theyll actually make it or not is another matter  altogether. Recruiters  are  not  serial liars I feel like theres always talk about recruiters just  telling people what they want to hear. Iv heard people  hold the viewpoint,  Oh,  they will just say whatever it takes to make the placement,  whether its unethical, immoral and goes against the best interests of client and/or candidate. I just dont agree.  Agency recruiters operate on a consultative basis where their reputation is everything and referrals are the make-or-breakers of their career, on both the candidate and client side. Lies eventually come out and bad recruitment decisions attributed to the recruiter involved will only damage their career. Recruiters have to think of their long term strategy, and lying isnt conducive to longevity in the industry. What I do believe, however, is that recruiters are excellent sales people. They have to be because at the end of the day, recruitment is  a career in  sales, where  people are  not only the  purchasers, but  the product too. Any sales person has to be persuasive and clever-talking, knowing what to say at the right times. Anyone working in a business setting knows they have to carefully craft what comes out of their mouth in order to get people on board with their company, vision, product or idea. Being persuasive is called doing your job and being successful. Everyone in the industry is not making it rain It would be great if this was the case, but its just not true. A lot of recruiters make great money, theres no doubt about that. Its certainly a lucrative industry and theres no denying that either.  The UK  turnover in 2015 was £31.5billion. Apparently the average annual sales for a consultant is around   £96k. When you team statistics like that with testimonials of high billers  dressing to perfection, going out for expensive dinners, driving super speedy cars and holidaying at the worlds best locations, its easy to assume everyone is well off in recruitment. The thing is, recruitment is full of extremely high highs and really low lows. Some people have nailed the consistency, but a lot of consultants will make it rain for months, then simply wont bill for two consecutive quarters. And then there are consultants who do what they can, but work on much smaller margins and are subject to less generous commission schemes. Yes, you can make a lot of money in recruitment, but everyone doing it isnt high-rolling all of the time. It is  not  only  about the money First of all, lets wind this one back a little bit. I agree that this is a HUGE reason why people are in recruitment. What I dont understand is why its  so  wrong. Im pretty sure cleaners dont clean for fun its for the money.  A lot of bankers would probably prefer to babysit puppies all day, but instead they choose to slave over reports and other strenuous tasks. Work, at some point, has to be about money. People need to eat and get their hair done. Yes, work should be  about enjoying what you do, making a positive impact on the world and all of that other lovely, wonderful stuff. But work is called work for a reason. You work. You get paid. It has to be about money. So why is it so wrong for recruiters to be in it for  the money? Secondly, a lot of recruiters love the work they do more than you could ever know. They live and breathe  it. They love the networking, the human interaction, the satisfaction of helping people, the challenge that comes with filling a client brief, the consultative role they play, the numbers, the sales, the chase. They love what they do and they are passionate, loyal and lively people. This is why its terribly inaccurate to slap a money hungry and thats all stamp over recruiters foreheads. That is such an insult to all of the genuinely dedicated and determined recruitment experts out there! Image: Shutterstock

Relish uncertainty - Its what makes life interesting

Relish uncertainty - Its what makes life interesting If you could see a movie of your life before you lived it, would you want to live it? Probably not. The thrill of living is that you dont know whats coming. In other words, uncertainty is what makes our lives fun. Sure, its hard to see uncertainty in such a positive light when you are out of work, or when you feel like youre flailing. But uncertainty is really another word for opportunity, and you cant harness an opportunity until you recognize its there. My first experience with severe uncertainty was my senior year of college. Not knowing what I was going to do with my life was too much for me to bear. I stopped going to classes and failed intro to sociology, which turned out to be a graduation requirement. So I stayed in school for the summer, and during that time I learned to cope with ambiguity. I realized that the only way to lead an interesting life is to encounter uncertainty and make a choice. Otherwise, your life is not your own it is a path someone else has chosen. Moments of uncertainty are when you create your life, when you become who you are. Uncertainty does not end with the job hunt, though. Every new role we take means another round of instability. Even fifteen years after college, when I start a new job I am nervous. But now I remind myself that I am lucky to be nervous because big opportunity and nervousness go hand in hand. Most of us already sense that uncertainty rescues us from boredom. We know, for instance, that when we go to a movie, someone will face a difficult situation and we will get to watch her muddle through it. And we pay for that. You would feel ripped off if you went to a movie with no ambiguity. We like watching it, but in our own lives we avoid it. This doesnt have to be the case, though. Here are some new approaches to uncertainty: Live through uncertainty: Some of you work for unstable companies. You do not need to create uncertainty; it is there every day that the company veers closer to layoffs. In this case, ambiguity is something to endure. If you can focus in the face of instability, you are more likely to be able to leverage opportunity. A great example of people who live through uncertainty is politicians running for office. Right now, the democratic candidates are betting almost everything on themselves and campaigning full-steam ahead even though their success is totally uncertain. With so many candidates in the race, the odds of success are not good, but many of these candidates are able to be at the top of their game in the face of huge insecurity. Use uncertainty to make yourself shine: For those of you who have no idea what to do next in your life, remember that uncertainty is what allows you to surprise yourself. If you could see each future step along the way, youd never get the chance to be amazed at what you can do. When I finally did graduate from college, I went on to play professional beach volleyball. At the time I worried that the decision was crazy, and that I wouldnt make the cut. But in the face of massive instability, beach volleyball seemed like a reasonable choice. Now that is one of the parts of my life I am most proud of. Create uncertainty: Some of you are stuck in your career. The only way to get unstuck is to create instability. Say to yourself, Maybe I can change my approach, maybe I can find a new specialty. In the face of a mortgage or a waning 401K, creating instability seems absurd. But think of it another way: Uncertainty is really another word for opportunity, and each of us should take responsibility for creating our own opportunities.

You are more than your degree, step outside the box. University of Manchester Careers Blog

You are more than your degree, step outside the box. University of Manchester Careers Blog Some degrees are vocational, some are not, but whatever you study there are always more options after Uni than just literally using your degree. You may be a scientist but you dont have to work in a lab! Lets face it a degree is a piece of paper that says you studied a subject for x years to a required standard. It does not take into account your individual interests, personality, extracurricular experience and circumstances. So why use it as the only basis to plan your future. Your actual degree will give you some specialist knowledge, some skills and possibly the option to do work experience like a placement or work on a project for a company. If you want to be literal about what your degree gives you check these out.  You can decide to what extent you have these skills or attributes.  Watch History student Muneera talking about her degree. While you are spending 3+ years studying you hopefully will get out and do some stuff, join a society, play sport, volunteer, get a job, mentor other students, do a year abroad, talk to people and form opinions.   All these things help you to develop skills.   You are evolving, your 3rd year self would probably laugh at some of your 1st year selfs expectations, thats fine we all learn by experience, you will carry on learning and evolving when you leave university and way beyond! See the bigger picture If you say you are a geography student and dont know what to do (I was) we  may ask you if there is anything related to your subject you are interested in just to check, but we dont have any expect you to have a revelation on the spot. Do some musing (ok we call it reflecting) think about who you are and what you want out of life. What is really important to you? Success, money, feeling good about what you do, location, hours of work, stress, other commitments? It doesnt have to be forever what do you need right now? (its nice to have a long term plan, but most peoples change) Can you accurately evaluate your own skills strengths?   Do you know what you are good at and what you enjoy (these may not be the same things!) Once you know a bit about yourself you could start looking at jobs and evaluating whether they meet your goals Prospects Planner can be useful at this point it will suggest some job roles that meet your preferences based on a short survey.   You could rule some in or out, and then go and  look at some live vacancies to see what the jobs really look like, or talk to employers at  fairs networking events. What if I find the job I really want and  Im doing the wrong degree? I wouldnt panic too much there are a huge amount of jobs that take any degree and often  its more important what skills you have developed. Big and small companies can also differ in their requirements so shop around. For some jobs you can do a Postgraduate conversion course e.g. IT, law, social work, teaching  medicine. Worst case scenario e.g. If you want to become an engineer and you have done English thats going to be tricky BUT there can be other options so dont give up talk to us  and keep an open mind. Dont worry too much about what other people are doing. While it can be interesting to find out what people from your degree do next, it doesnt tell you what they did  after that   which could be completely different. Often students tell us all my friends are doing this.   They may be right, they may be wrong or  it may be just right for them.   You need to evaluate what YOU want to do and then take action accordingly. By doing whatever everyone else is doing you could simply be wasting your time or completely stressing yourself out! Talk to us about options with or without your degree! Why Is Liverpool the Best UK City to Find Your Dream Job in 2017

Why Is Liverpool the Best UK City to Find Your Dream Job in 2017 With last year’s announcement of Liverpool as the most entrepreneurial city in the UK, no one seems to be surprised if the city is currently stealing the crown to both London and Edinburgh as the best place to find a job in the UK.Acknowledged as the cultural capital of the North, Liverpool is divided into four districts: commercial, historical Liverpool, the creative area and the waterfront. This scheme of different scenarios makes Liverpool an attractive place for businesspeople worldwide to settle down and invest, becoming the main reason why startups have reached such a hype through the last five years at the North’s cultural niche, but there are other aspects to consider as well.Cost to Live in LiverpoolevalOne of the main differences between London and Liverpool are the rental fees for offices and even apartments. The overall budget needed renting a place and covering bills can be as little as 84% less than the Capital’s current fees if we consider the average rental fee is rated in £120 per square foot, whereas you can find a place to live at the priciest buildings for just £20/sq. foot at Liverpool. This makes the offer especially attractive for young people willing to take risks.evalIn a two-hour train trip you are arriving in London; therefore, proximity to UK’s administrative hubs shouldn’t be a problem, not to mention the accessible fees for internal flights from Liverpool’s John Lennon Airport in the outskirts of the city, which also connects to international flights to some famous destinations as Warsaw, Madrid, Rome, Paris, Amsterdam, Barcelona, Dublin, among others. Moreover, given the popularity of its university campus, Liverpool was also able to catch the interest of young people who, due to the demand for work to cover, choose to settle in the city after getting a good waged job instead of losing the chance just for moving back home.Experiencing a Cultural HubNo one can deny some events that shaped Liverpool’s history, from it s Gothic Revival buildings to The Beatles and breath-taking art galleries, there is a bit of everything to experience in Liverpool, regardless of your age.Photo Credit â€" pexels.comImportant business meetings can take place at trendy Matou, enjoying some Thai Food dishes while witnessing the enthralling views of Liverpool’s waterfront at this restaurant situated on the second floor of the Ferry Terminal: a practical approach for mixing businesses and cultural experiences without needing to set a foot outside to catch your way back home. There is, undoubtedly, an added value in this cultural landscape. Proof of that is the development of the cultural district where not only artists from different places in the UK but also businesspeople whose intent is geared towards design are making the spot to find a non-conventional work that matches both your interests and skills.Making Your Dreams Come TrueDespite showing the worst numbers in startup survival, Liverpool still offers plenty ro om for development, not to mention interest from both public and private initiative to transform your ideas into solid businesses.Startup accelerators as SparkUp or IdeaAlive, among other companies geared towards the same purpose, are helping young startups on the rise to reach their full potential by troubleshooting the common mistakes we can make during the early stages of our business.evalPartnering with both the University of Liverpool and the Liverpool Chamber of Commerce, this is the most accurate indicator of the intent local authorities have to encourage young people, yet numbers still show more favourable conditions for trading at both Manchester and London rather than in Liverpool.Photo Credit â€" Pexels.comWould Liverpool prove to be “the” place to live for the next decade? Most certainly. Even after Brexit’s impact in the local economy, investors still acknowledge the city’s potential as the most viable alternative to traditional London. Competing with places lik e Cambridge for a place among the best entrepreneurial cities to live worldwide, there are many stories left to be told on what Liverpool may achieve.

Could An Interim Job Meet Your Current Needs - Hire Imaging

Could An Interim Job Meet Your Current Needs - Hire Imaging Sometimes the need for dependable income surpasses finding the ideal job fit. If you are in this position, perhaps an interim job could be your answer. I’ll define the interim job as one that provides you with steady pay at a level that meets at least your minimal financial needs.   You accept this job as a temporary solution without any intention of staying in this line of work on a permanent basis. The job may have no connection to your career goals; it’s employment that sustains you until you find a better fit. So, you continue to engage in an active job search  while you are employed in the interim job. The 4-point Interim Job Wish List In a perfect world, every interim job will meet these four conditions: It guarantees enough income on a regular basis allowing you and your family to live without financial hardship. It’s available with relatively minimal preparation, and more readily obtainable than most types of work. This accelerates your entry and start. It’s moderate in its demands on your working time, so that you have enough time remaining during the week for continued exploration of career opportunities aligned to your goals. It enables recurrent interaction with a wide variety of folks, so you can make connections throughout your interim job that will aid your career exploration. I reference “perfect world” because it may be hard to find an interim job meeting all four points on the wish list. That’s okay. It’s definitely possible to find an interim job that meets some of them. Career-Unrelated Interim Job Possibilities There are a number of positions (I’ve barely scratched the surface) that may fit the bill because they are reasonably fast to enter and could make minimum   demands upon you other than devoting the required number of hours. In a nutshell, they provide the conditions where you can earn money and have energy/time to continue your job search. Additionally, many of these positions offer you relatively good access to large numbers of people in a variety of work scenarios. Temporary office support. Particularly in metropolitan areas and provided you have office skills, this is a great opportunity to sample a variety of work situations because you work for a few days or weeks for various employers in different settings. Of course, you are exposed to folks connected with these companies â€" internal staff to external customers and vendors. A receptionist is a particularly interesting interim role. You are the first point of contact with many visitors. Server, short-order cook or bartender.  People are friendly when they are being fed, and you could work a schedule around yours. Feeding customers in the morning, at lunch or at supper. The networking factor is wonderful. I know of people who landed dream jobs through a server. Why not vice versa? Think family café to Starbucks! And I’ve heard bartenders referred to as underpaid psychologists! Seriously, this role provides one of the best opportunities to listen to people when they are comfortable and talking! Retail store clerk, customer service or greeter. There are many stores where people love being and have time to talk. If you have a specialty hobby or interest, you might be able to connect with folks who share that passion â€" and have other value to give in the form of information or contacts. Even a big box or general retail “gig” can be a great interim job. Comparison shopper. You gain exposure to many people by visiting several stores each day. Taxi driver. Business folks often chat with cab drivers. You gain repeated opportunities to glean valuable clues about various professions and happenings. Sales. Many companies outsource temporary sales positions to cover maternity leaves, a salesperson out due to health reasons or personal emergencies, etc. Your goal would be to move sales forward. You may have a territory or be inside sales. You’ll need to be able to step in with no or minimal training. You may be paid commission. But if you are able to bring in revenue and/or keep customers happy, you could do very nicely. And again, have potential to expand your network. Taking an interim job not necessarily related to your ideal career can be a great solution. It can fill employment gaps, provide a steady paycheck, build skills, boost your network, and even serve as a window of opportunity  for permanent placement. I hardly made a dent. Make your own list. In my next post, I’ll explore interim jobs you might take when you don’t have the luxury of veering off course to the non-related roles. I’ll also share some clients’ stories where interim jobs opened doors to career dreams. Photo: meddygarnet
